She was diagnosed with cancer of the breast in 1989. Handler passed away after fighting cancer for over ten years. The father of Handler is Jewish and she was brought up in Reform Judaism. Handler was born in a pleasant neighborhood and had a joyful childhood. She emigrated into Los Angeles when she was 19, in order to take on acting. Handler began acting in order to earn income. However, when she was age 21, Handler decided to pursue stand-up comedy as a full-time profession after she discovered her storytelling capabilities. Handler started her stand-up career on her role on the Oxygen Network's Girls Behaving Poorly show, which featured a reality TV show that had an in-camera hidden camera and a practical joke. From 2002 until 2005, the show aired. The handler began to appear on other TV shows, such as Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler began working on The Tonight Show as a correspondent. Handler gained notoriety in 2006 when she hosted a show for E! It was titled The Chelsea Show. The Chelsea Show ran for 2 seasons. The following year, Handler performed on the Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour in the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend, HBO and Comedy Central have all broadcasted her stand-up performances. She was named host of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in 2010. With this, she became only the second female to host VMA's after Roseanne Barr.
